چکیده

This paper presents an interactive hierarchical motion control system dedicated to the animation of human figure locomotion in virtual environments. As observed in gait experiments, controlling the trajectories of the feet during gait is a precise end-point control task. Inverse kinematics with optimal approaches are used to control the complex relationships between the motion of the body and the coordination of its legs. For each step, the simulation of the support leg is executed first, followed by the swing leg, which incorporates the position of the pelvis from the support leg. That is, the foot placement of the support leg serves as the kinematics constraint, while the position of the pelvis is defined through the evaluation of a controlcriteria optimization. Then, the swing leg movement is defined to satisfy two criteria in order: collision avoidance, and control-criteria optimization. Finally, animation attributes, such as controlling parameters and pre-processed motion modules, are applied to achieve a variety of personalities and walking styles.

Simulation and scenario support for virtual environments

Over the past few years, we have developed several research projects focusing on critical support technologies for virtual environments. In this paper, we outline three aspects of our effort: simulation support, scenario authoring, and real-time animation of human locomotion. Our work on physical simulation combines dynamics and collision/contact analysis to provide physical realism to virtual ...

Enactive Navigation in Virtual Environments: Evaluation of the Walking PAD

This paper presents a human performance evaluation of a low-cost enactive locomotion interface, the walking-PAD, that provides users with the ability to engage in a life-like walking experience in virtual environments (VEs) by stepping in place. Stepping actions are performed on top of a platform with embedded grid of switch sensors that detect footfalls pressure. Based on data received from se...

New simple virtual walking method – walking on the spot

In CAVE-like environments human locomotion is significantly restricted due to physical space and configural constraints. Interaction techniques based upon stepping in place have been suggested as a way to simulate long range locomotion. We describe a new method for step detection and estimation of forward walking speed and direction in an immersive virtual environment. To calibrate our system a...

Human walking animation based on foot reaction force in the three-dimensional virtual world

This paper introduces a method that can generate continuous human walking motion automatically on an arbitrary path in a three-dimensional (3D) modelled scene. The method is based on a physical approach that solves the boundary value problem. In the motion generation stage, natural-looking walking motion, which includes plane walking, walking upstairs and downstairs and walking on a curved path...

Synthetic Actors in Real World Animating Virtual Actors in Real Environments

This paper tries to provide a detailed and complete description of merging virtual actors with animation in a real environment. It describes the tasks involved in each stage of integration such as the video acquisition, the extraction of camera parameters, the creation and animation of virtual actors, and the rendering of the final images. The most important problems are discussed: real objects...
